5G for Europe: development and university initiative

5G for Europe program is created for the implementation of innovative research and industrial projects based on the use of opportunities of the fifth-generation networks.

Manufacturers, government agencies and leading universities in Europe are launching a joint program aimed at improving competitiveness. The program will help to effectively transform the industry, to create new value for customers and improve the competitiveness of European production.

Ericsson has announced the expansion of interdisciplinary programs of research and development in the field of communication of the fifth generation 5G for Europe ( «5G for Europe") on a number of new European markets. 5G for Europe program is created for the implementation of pilot innovative research and industrial projects based on the use of opportunities 5G networks. Participants in the program - the largest manufacturers, government agencies and leading universities - will work together to study the issues of ICT use in the industrial production, products and services.

The program aims to strengthen Europe's position as the second largest region in terms of investment in the world in R & D. The program will also be launched innovative designs for smaller firms, aimed at co-operation with various market players and academics. The aim of these projects - to provide timely access to technologies and their affordability.

In addition, participants 5G for Europe will develop pilot-5G projects in the transport and automotive industry, Internet of things, energy systems and utilities, security, public infrastructure and retail.

Among the program's partners - leading universities, such as the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (Pisa, Italy) Technische Universität (Dresden, Germany), Universidad Carlos III (Madrid, Spain), IMDEA Networks Institute (Madrid, Spain) and King's College (London , United Kingdom). Major industry partners program - wiseSense, Weiss Robotics and MyOmega System Technology from Germany, Zucchetti Centro Sistemi of Italy.

In March 2015, together with the Swedish Ericsson manufacturers and research partners launched the R & D-program 5G for Sweden ( «5G for Sweden"). 5G for Europe Partnership expands the scope of this program for 7 European countries and 10 participants, and over time their number will increase.

Approximately 60% of Ericsson investment in R & D is in Europe, in Europe employs 15 000 out of 25 000 employees Ericsson, engaged in R & D. In 2013, Ericsson filed the largest number of patent applications for digital communications in the European Patent Office. The company is leading in the deployment of mobile communications and mobile broadband in Europe and has a partnership agreement with the leading European operators.
